Game Vision Statement

In this game you will play as Thor, god of thunder, who became unworthy due to a conflict from the past and no longer possesses his famous Hammer, Mjolnir. Banished from his home of Asgard and Earth( Midgard ), he is on a path to regain his worthiness and rediscover his godhood.

Background

This is the Thor from Marvel comics, but like this years Marvel's Spider-Man game, it takes inspiration from the comics but is an original story idea of it's own. The plan is to mix thing's up a bit by mixing stories from the actual Norse mythology and stories from Marvel comics, in this case The God Butcher story line and The Unworthy Thor story line.
THE GOD BUTCHER:
In this Thor story line, Thor is fighting a powerful foe called Gorr. Gorr's goal is to kill all gods as he believes that they are arrogant and that they do more damage than good. Thor succeeds in stopping Gorr.
THE UNWORTHY THOR:
Thor is at a point of being unworthy after fining out that Gorr was right, basically, no god is worthy of his hammer, Mjolnir. He lost his arm to Malekith and now travels by using his ram, Toothgnasher. He now uses his old battle axe, Jarnbjorn. He is on a quest to once again become worthy, meeting many friends and foes in his way.
NORSE MYTHOLOGY:
I want this story to be a bit more focused on the nine realms of Norse mythology rather than the universe in the comics themselves. The reason for this is for Thor to be more grounded and focus on his role as a warrior from Asgard who is meant to protect the realms.
STORY:
Upon seeing that his son is no longer worthy of his hammer, Odin sees him as a disappointment and a disgrace to his people and Thor's beloved Midgard( Earth ) and as a punishment Thor is banished from those realms and destined to venture across the remaining seven realms. Before he leaves he digs up his old axe, Jarnbjorn and is granted one of his old rams, Toothgnasher. He fairs well to his best friend Heimdal who is on Thor's side in this story and will occasionally let him use the Bifrost to travel quickly across the realms.

Description/ Gameplay

The game starts as a sequence in the past where you fight Gorr, he's basically the first boss and at that point you still have the hammer and possess all of Thor's powers as well as an armor set. You have the ability of flight, casting thunder, a thunder slam and hammer throw as well as combos you can pull by still having the hammer Mjolnir. After beating Gorr you get some dialogue, something like "...no god is worthy..." After that you are de-powered.

Since it's an RPG you'll have to make decisions and choose different paths. Thor is trying to prove that he is worthy, he no longer possesses his hammer and believes to no longer have powers. Depending on what decisions you make, you can be more worthy or more unworthy, you can make new friends or enemies which can help you on your journey. You'll help others with tasks, obstacles and attacks from enemies. That way you'll build reputation and gain respect/ or disrespect depending on what path you choose. You'll be able to do that across Seven realms.

COMBAT:
Combat is melee based, throughout the game you'll have different powers. You start with the best weapon in the game, Thor's hammer Mjolnir. Then you get the Jarnbjorn axe and later you channel your god powers and are able to summon thunder and lightning and if you make the right decisions you become worthy once again and get back Mjolnir.
Jarnbjorn axe: the light attack button can do combos if used multiple times at once, if you hold it down you can perform a spin throw. There is a heavy attack button than also lets you perform combos which are slower but deal more damage and a charge, charged attack lets you do a straight power throw. There is a button that let's you summon the weapon back ( used for the hammer as well ).
Hand melee: Thor is very strong and can pick up heavy objects like boulders and throw them by holding the heavy attack button. The combo controls are the same as the axe ones but don't have the same effect, doesn't do as much damage as the axe.
Lightning melee: Later in the story Thor re-discovers his godly powers and he will now be able to summon lightning without the aid of Mjolnir. There will be a meter you can charge by performing attacks and consuming certain type of food like beer, mead and wine. Can be activated with a button but only let's you use hand melee attacks until you unlock Mjolnir again, both of those combined create extra heavy attacks. It also allows you to shoot lightning.
Mjolnir: The most powerful weapon in game. Has the exact same controls as the axe but does twice as much damage, a button can also summon and charge the hammer with lightning, lightning special attack can also increase speed and damage. By jumping and using the heavy attack you can create a shock wave that eliminates surrounding enemies.

MOBILITY:
You can walk, sprint by pressing a button that allows you to do so and jump using the jump button. Mjolnir let's you fly very fast by holding down the jump button. You can summon Toothgnasher, a ram that let's you fly around an area and travel to different realms. Occasionally you can summon Heimdal to use the Bifrost for fast travel, that is time limited, eg once every 12hrs. You can also climb buildings and scale mountains.

There are Seven Accessible Realms and the 8th, Asgard, unlocks at the end of the story.
#1 Svartalfheim: World of the dark Elves.
Ruled by Malekith the Accused, this is an evil race of elves who want to bring darkness to the 9 realms.
#2 Alfheim: World of the light Elves.
A world filled with light, blue, white, green and pink colours, fortresses and castles and quests from the light elves who are being tormented by the dark elves and their leader, Malekith. This leads to Thor confronting Malekith, this is one of the first big decisions you as a player are going to have to make in the game. You either try to fight him with a small chance of winning against a whole army, plus he is a higher level than you at this point in the story, or you make a bargain. The deal is that he cuts off one of your arms and in return he no longer torments Alfheim. This leads us to the next realm.
#3 Nidavellir: World of the Dwarves.
Ruled by Eitiri, dwarves are the best blacksmiths in all of the 9 realms. You can collect Uru, a rare Asgardian metal to make new weapons and armor. In the game, Thor saves a group of dwarves, and in return he is offered a new arm out of Uru.
#4 Jotunheim: World of the Frost Giants.
Ruled by Laofei, a race of giants who are enemy to the Asgardians, Thor want's to make peace with them instead of continuing the war between the two worlds.
#5 Muspelheim: World of Fire.
Ruled by Surtr the fire giant, this world doesn't have anything to offer except for a quest with a dragon that you CAN tame.
#6 Helheim: Norse version of Hell.
Ruled by Hela, This is as rear as Muspelheim. You find yourself there after the encounter with Malekith. It is a cold realm,
#7 Vanaheim: World to the Venir.
This is where most gods are from but also where most action can take place as it is constantly invaded. All races can be found on this world.
#8 Asgard: Realm of the gods.
Ruled by Odin, father of Thor, is the place where you face the final boss of the game, Odin as he himself proves to be unworthy.

You will have a storage system for food and gear, You will have a health bar, a power bar and a map. The map can be expanded into the World Tree that let's you fast travel and look at different realm maps. You will have different dialogue options depending on if you want to choose the worthy or the unworthy path.

  1. I can see how much effort you put into this blog post, and how passionate you are about this game. The idea of the game is amazing and the fact you are using someone as well known in popular culture as Thor bodes very well. This is a very big project, and I have a feeling that it would take much longer than the time we have allotted to design all 7 realms, so maybe you could have him stuck on one and design that one really well. The idea of using Mjolnir to fly and to use as a weapon is probably every Thor-fans dream. Toothgnasher is a new one to me but I know you did your research. I look forward to what you have in store for us and for The Unworthy Thor.

  2. I have to say I really enjoyed reading your vision statement Kris. I'm very excited to see what you do with the game. I think your examples of Thor and all the other mythologies were very well thought out and I can see that you really want to do this game. Your strongest points is the storyline. It is very detailed. It beginning a role playing game it’s easy to connect with the characters and since I love marvel and can connect with your passion for making the game. Did you consider brining Loki into the game as a helper of sorts or even bring Stark or Captain America in. The game sounds really interesting but for the prototype I would do a demo with Thor in one part of the game as this game sounds like it would take more the one semester to do it in. That’s all I have to say bit keep up the good work and can't wait to hear more about it.
